When I was just a little girl growing up in Salt Lake, my mother opened up a little millinery shop in the basement of the old Charleston Apartment building on 13th East. This was right across the street from our home on Douglas Street. She called it Wynn’s House of Sew and Sew and there created the most marvelous hats. Millinery is an art that has gone by the way in our day, but back in the 40s and 50s, ladies wore hats! I used to love to watch her block the wool hats on a wooden head and then embellish them with nets, flowers and beads. I spent hours mostly on the floor playing with the scraps and creating my own stunning hats. Thus began my great love for natural fibers of all kinds, and more particularly, any natural fiber I can embellish!
And so, with great excitement, my daughter, Meredith, and I announce our own studio, Winnie’s Workshop. Located in the charming town of Midway, Winnie's Workshop will offer classes in needle felting and quilting. We especially want to keep these arts alive and teach young girls (and boys too). The workshop is also equipped with my daughter's antique letter press equipment. She will be offering classes in letter press and custom bookmaking once she finishes her MFA this summer.
Check out our pictures - click on our calendar and email us and let us know what classes you would like to take. See our free tutorial on making the one of a kind needle felted pin cushions that everyone loves. You can also pile them up in a bowl and call them decorator balls - adorable in any room.
